I have been fortunate in my life to travel to a few AMAZING countries: Kenya, India, and Mexico. These experiences have vastly changed and has diversified my entire perspective on life. These people have nothing and see death far too often, but they continue to choose joy each and every day. My first trip was to Kenya which is what inspired me to become a teacher. One day, it actually poured down rain for about an hour and me and a few friends and native children jumped into our van to avoid the downpour. After only a few minutes, the windows began to fog and I wrote my name on the window. To my surprise, these village children read and said my name aloud! Next, I wrote the sentence "where do you live" and they wrote me the answer in English! After weeks of zero communication, the barrier was finally broken! These children were learning to read and write English, but there teacher instructed them in their mother tongue; therefore, they could not speak it well. I was so excited and intent about discovering more about these people that it really sparked an interest in teaching in general. I believe that my heart changed and matured during these trips and taught me that it is important for all people to experience what I did... and that is absolutely possible. All you have to do is teach respect for diversity!
